Coalition Wraps Up Katrina BikeAid Project
Thank you to all of the generous donors and supporters that made the Katrina BikeAid project possible. Since hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the Gulf Coast this fall, well over 1,000 bicycles have been collected and distributed in Texas to individuals that have been affected by the storms. This amazing feat was only possible through the coordinated efforts of several Texas organizations and businesses and hundreds of individual donors.
Texas Bicycle Coalition would like to thank:
Bicycle Sport Shop for hosting two bike donation drives and donating countless mechanic hours, parts and accessories for fixing up the bicycles;

Austin's Yellow Bike Project for fixing, housing and distributing hundreds of donated bicycles;

Austin Cycling Association for donating club funds to purchase hundreds of helmets for evacuees; and

Waco Bicycle Club for collecting, fixing and delivering bicycles to the final bike drive.

Special thanks to Marty at Bicycle Sports Shop, John and Pete at the Yellow Bike Project, Scott and Fred at the Austin Cycling Association and Myron at the Katrina Help Austin Center.

The Yellow Bike Project has graciously agreed to continue fixing and distributing bikes for evacuees for the next few months. Evacuees who are interested in learning bicycle mechanics and fixing up their own bike can come to the shop to choose a from the entire selection of donated bikes in the workshop. Yellow Bike will provide the tools, workshop space and guidance to help build and repair bicycles.

In addition, Yellow Bike will continue to turn out a small but steady selection of "ready to ride" bicycles for evacuees. Anyone who is interested in getting a bicycle should call 512-457-9880 during regular shop hours to inquire about the current selection. The shop is located 2013 East 51st Street. Yellow Bike Project Hours:
Monday through Friday 6pm - 10pm (open at 7pm on Fridays)
EXCEPT Tuesday (Shop is closed on Tuesday)
