Ride for the Roses
Thursday, 03 November 2005

On the weekend of October 21-23, thousands of cyclists from around the world traveled to Austin for the annual Ride for the Roses. Texas Bicycle Coalition is proud to have been a part of the weekend’s events.

The weekend’s events raised more than $7 million for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and increased interest in cycling.

Texas Bicycle Coalition operated a Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday for the LiveStrong Kid’s Event. Complete with hay bales and a rodeo clown, hundreds of kids learned the importance of always wearing a helmet while cycling, how to check over a bike for safety and important skills to implement while riding.

The Coalition also staffed a booth in the exposition hall. The Share the Road license plate banners attracted a lot of attention to our booth. Hundreds of applications for the specialty plate were distributed, and about a dozen people completed a form on the spot. More than 50 of the commemorative Share the Road license plates were sold, many to Lance fans from around the world. Don’t be surprised the next time you travel through Oklahoma and see collectible plates on the front of non-Texan cars!

Texas Bicycle Coalition also donated two Membership Baskets to be included in the silent auction at the Peloton Dinner for top fundraisers. The baskets included a free sponsor level membership, a Coalition ballcap, a pair of Coalition cycling socks, a commemorative Share the Road license plate and cycling literature. Member Shops Waterloo Cycles and University Cyclery donated attractive wicker handlebar baskets to complete the presentation. Both baskets auctioned for more than $115.
