Recent fatalities underscore greater need for cycling safety
Advocates say training, awareness can reduce accidents

Not all cyclists put safety first, said Chris Davis, a certified cycling safety instructor with the Texas Bicycle Coalition. Drivers often see bicycles as something in their way. As a result, some cyclists distrust drivers and maneuver however they want in traffic to protect themselves.

"There's your testosterone-crazed, I-want-to-be-Lance-Armstrong guy who's wearing several layers of Lycra and obeying all the rules," she said. "Then, there are people who ride around for transportation. They're the people more likely to be wearing a cowboy hat than a helmet."
