Texas SuperCyclist Teacher Certification Trains 134 Teachers in June
Tuesday, 22 July 2008
Summer is a busy time for staff development for Texas teachers, and many have chosen to receive six hours of continuing education credits by participating in the Texas SuperCyclist Teacher Certification Training.

Texas Bicycle Coalition trained 134 teachers in June, including teachers from Cypress Fairbanks, Spring, Aldine, Klein, Waco and Dallas. Faculty from the University of Texas at Brownsville and University of Texas at Permian Basin also received training. This brings us to 211 teachers trained so far this year, well on our way to meeting our goal of 350.

Responses to the trainings have been positive and enthusiastic, as you can see from these comments from the training evaluations:
"I loved the training!  I really enjoyed the interactive activities."

"The games and physical training were fun!  I like trying them so I have more knowledge of how the games will run when I teach them."

"The favorite part of the training was the hands on learning, seeing how to set up and then being able to participate in the activities."

Cypress Fairbanks P.E. Coordinator Loretta Bourn later sent the following kind words:
"The presenters did an outstanding job. [They] were well-prepared, knowledgeable and articulate. The pacing between seated and active components of the training served to keep participants interested, engaged and involved. Thank you for providing a curriculum and trainers for bicycle safety. I look forward to the two remaining training sessions we have scheduled."

Each active teacher will reach an estimated 258 students per year with the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum lessons. Teachers trained in the 2008 training year through June could reach 54,548 more students annually on top of the estimated 200,000 students already trained annually by teachers certified in years past.

An additional seven trainings are scheduled through the month of August in the following cities: Round Rock, Dallas, Killeen, Cypress Fairbanks, Pflugerville, Mission and Donna.
