Amarillo Children’s Health and Safety Fair |

The first Amarillo Children’s Health and Safety Fair was held on
Saturday, September 15, 2007, from noon to 4 p.m. This event was
presented by the Amarillo Family Wellness Group. I began organizing the
health and safety fair in May of this year in order to promote healthy
lifestyles of the children of Amarillo and a safe environment in which
to grow up. Admission was free to all and was primarily advertised to
all Amarillo elementary schools via 16,000 flyers in their Wednesday
folders. The Amarillo Family Wellness Group also participated in the
Tri-State Fair Parade earlier that same day (handing out flyers), as well as through
newspaper and radio public service announcements.

The City of Amarillo had a grand opening ceremony for a new skate park
Saturday, September 8, 2007. This project was funded by the 2006/2007
Parks Division Capital Improvement Program. It is a “street course”
type design which can be utilized by bikers and skate boarders.

Unintentional and preventable injuries are the leading cause of death
for children younger than 14. Through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids
initiative, associates volunteer at The Children’s Hospital at
Northwest Texas Healthcare System in Amarillo, Texas. They organize
parties, participate in arts-and-crafts activities, and stock the
playroom with toys for children during their hospital stays.

Labor Day weekend held the promise of pedaling fun for all ages and
skill levels. The event included tour rides, time trials, family fun
ride, Criterium races, Kids’ Cup, and road races for the competitive
minded. And for those not so inclined, the Village included children’s
activities, bouncers, games, BMX demonstrations, live music and
refreshments free to the public.
