El Paso hosts first U.S. Ciclovia! |
|
Monday, 14 May 2007 |
Sunday morning, May 5th arrived in El Paso with beautiful blue skies, a temperature of 60 degrees and little or no wind. It was a perfect day to “Take the Parks to The People”. Ciclovia is a concept born in Bogota, Columbia just over twenty years ago. Now on any Sunday morning one can find as many as a million people in selected streets of Bogota. Ciclovia is also part of Bogotá’s push to promote public transportation and has increased sales of bicycles nearly 1,000% in the last eight years. In 2003 Ciudad Juarez started a similar program and soon had as many as 60,000 people participating on Sunday mornings, but a change in city administration brought this to an abrupt end just over two years ago. In 2005 the idea of having a Ciclovia in El Paso was born. Then after a two year struggle and many hours of hard work El Paso has become the first city in the United States to boldly host a Ciclovia program.

The Old Tascosa Cycling Club of Amarillo decided to celebrate April Fools Day outside. The club hosted rides starting at 2:00 pm from the Juniper Camp Ground in Palo Duro Canyon, on Sunday, April 1, 2007. The conditions were perfect with temperatures in the mid 70’s and almost no wind.
Palo Duro Canyon is one of the best known Texas State Parks and is affectionately known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. This miraculous canyon, opened in 1934, was formed by water erosion. It has over 26,000 scenic acres; 120 miles long and 20 miles wide; and a maximum depth of 800 feet.

Bikes for Tykes Call for Volunteers |
|
Monday, 12 February 2007 |
|
Bikes for Tykes needs 15 volunteers to help with a 180 bike give-away through the Big Brothers and Sister Organization. The event is on Feb 28th from 5:30 to about 7:30 p.m., at the Lowes Anatole in Dallas. Teams from Big Brothers and Sisters assemble new bikes, and unbeknownst to them, there are Little Brothers and Sisters waiting for the bikes when they are finished. But before the kids get the bikes, we need volunteers to check the bikes over and remedy any problems with the assemblies.
In addition to getting a number of bikes to deserving kids, the organizing company also pays Bikes for Tykes for the service. This helps Bikes for Tykes pay the rent and buy supplies for the year. If you have the time to help out this deserving organization, contact Peter Cox at
