Texas SuperCyclist Teacher Certification Trains 134 Teachers in June
Summer is a busy time for staff development for Texas teachers, and many have chosen to receive six hours of continuing education credits by participating in the Texas SuperCyclist Teacher Certification Training.
Texas Bicycle Coalition trained 134 teachers in June, including teachers from Cypress Fairbanks, Spring, Aldine, Klein, Waco and Dallas. Faculty from the University of Texas at Brownsville and University of Texas at Permian Basin also received training. This brings us to 211 teachers trained so far this year, well on our way to meeting our goal of 350.
Responses to the trainings have been positive and enthusiastic, as you can see from these comments from the training evaluations:
"I loved the training! I really enjoyed the interactive activities."
"The games and physical training were fun! I like trying them so I have more knowledge of how the games will run when I teach them."
"The favorite part of the training was the hands on learning, seeing how to set up and then being able to participate in the activities."
10.They look great on your car!
9.BikeTexas gets $22 of the $30 annual fee which helps keep the
Texas SuperCyclist Teacher Certification Trainings across Texas up and running.
8.Each plate is equivalent to a "Share the Road" sign by the side of the road,
except that the driver behind you at the red light can read it for 20 seconds
(instead of 2 seconds) while you both wait for the light to turn green.
7.The
Florida Bicycle Association and Bike Florida sell more than
13,000 of their Share the Road plates annually to our 2,500. Texas, a
much bigger state than Florida (and France,
for that matter!) can do better! You can
get us caught up to our fellow Floridian cyclists and help expand Texas bike safety education while you're at
it.
6. Your friends will recognize you for the outstanding jock you are.
5.They
make great Christmas and birthday presents for your siblings(who may not be
great jocks like you, but they certainly want to emulate you). BikeTexas
can process your gift payment, and we will send you a bicycle themed card to
announce the gift, plus a free one-year TBC membership!
4.They are available on a walk-in basis in the higher-population counties in
Texas: Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, Travis, El Paso and others (call ahead
to check), and they will pro-rate your remaining registration in a one-stop
transaction.
3. Now you don't even have to leave the comfort
of your own home - You can order them online! Click here, or click the "Share the Road License Plate" link at the top right of this page. Nothing could be easier!
2.Elected officials will know how many of us there really are, even when we
aren't on our bikes.
1. Great? Did we say great? They look AWESOME on your car!!!
School Track & Field Day + Bike Ride = Success in Pasadena
Cyclist and SuperCyclist-Certified PE teacher Oscar Torres noticed something very fundamental missing from the Annual Track and Field Day at Williams Elementary School in Pasadena. Bicycling!
So Oscar and fellow PE teacher David Garza fixed that problem this past May 12th when they organized the first annual Williams Track and Field Day Bike Ride. But first, they prepped the students with three weeks of bicycle safety lessons, using the 15-unit SuperCyclist curriculum. By the day of the ride, the kids knew their hand signals and the seven bike laws cold!
Helmet fitting was especially emphasized in the three weeks prior to the event. Assistant principals, Linda Flores and Wendy Wiseburn, also did a helmet fitting check just before the kids mounted up for to the ride.
Cy-Fair PE Teachers Nail First of Three Scheduled SuperCyclist Trainings
Forty-three pumped-up elementary school PE teachers gathered at Ramona Bang Elementary School in the Cypress-Fairbanks (Cy-Fair) ISD on June 4 for the Texas SuperCyclist Curriculum certification training. Up to 11,094 Cy-Fair elementary and middle school students stand to receive bike safety education in the coming school year, based on 2007 SuperCyclist survey results of average number of students taught by PE teachers actively implementing SuperCyclist lessons. (258 students per active teacher.)
The larger-than-usual size of enrollment in the SuperCyclist training was not a problem as Texas Bicycle Coalition contract SuperCyclist instructors, Regina Garza and KC Jones, moved through the classroom and active portions of the six-hour training, guiding the teachers through the key aspects of the 15-unit curriculum.
Texas Bicycle Coalition staff members Brenda Chuleewah and Mark Stine and Cy-Fair ISD PE Coordinator Loretta Bourn managed the logistics to keep the training on a smooth course.
The teachers jumped into the Hang-Tag, Seven-Rules, Decision Course,
and Skills Course gym exercises, truly enjoying the rare chance to all
come together from their schools and have a great time before heading
off to their summer lives. With their SuperCyclist certification, they
also carry off six continuing-education credits for their professional
development.
Safe Routes to School Advocate Brings SuperCyclist Training to Arlington Area
It
takes a special person to achieve all that Sharon Canclini is working
to achieve for children’s health and safety. Through her
Community Nursing class at Texas Christian University (TCU), Sharon
helps nurses learn how to identify and meet community health
needs. This includes knowledge of how to teach bicycle safety to
children.
Sharon is also pursuing a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) grant for
complete sidewalks and other walking and bicycle infrastructure for the
school in her Arlington neighborhood, the Carol Holt Elementary School
(EL)
Carol Holt EL is a beautiful new (2007) school surrounded by
neighborhoods. Unfortunately, like too many new schools, planning
and construction failed to resolve barriers that prevent children from
safely walking or biking to school. There are narrow roads that
drop off into ditches. Private properties and fence-lines prevent
other avenues of access to the school. Children walking or
bicycling are forced to navigate rough shoulders and ditches.
Sharon says this situation is complicated by truck traffic to and from a gas exploration well near the school.
Sharon called TBC to arrange a Texas SuperCyclist Teacher Certification Training on April 11, 2008 for her nursing students, as
well as for teachers, public health professionals and other youth
workers in the area.
