Houston ISD SuperCyclist Training Rescheduled |
|
Thursday, 02 February 2006 |
|
On August 18, 2005, nine-year-old Ruth Young was riding her bicycle to school when she was tragically struck and killed by a school bus a block from Frazier Elementary in Pasadena. Texas Bicycle Coalition quickly responded and, with the support of Superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra and Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston), coordinated a SuperCyclist bicycle safety education teacher training for all 207 elementary schools in Houston Independent School District. Unfortunately, the September 30, 2005 training had to be postponed as Houston was evacuated in preparation for Hurricane Rita.
The Houston ISD SuperCyclist Training has been rescheduled for Monday, April 24, 2006. This is a district in-service day, and as such attendance is expected to be very high. Details on the location for the training will be available at www.BikeTexas.org/Trainings. More about Ruth’s story...

Texas Bicycle Coalition is moving full steam ahead with its mission of training all Texas elementary physical education teachers in the SuperCyclist bicycle safety curriculum.
On September 30, Texas Bicycle Coalition will host its first re-training of field instructors in three years. BikeTexas Field Instructors, who are also League Certified Instructors and BikeTexas members, facilitate SuperCyclist teacher trainings. During the re-training, these instructors will work with Coalition staff to enhance the quality and activity level of SuperCyclist teacher trainings. In doing so, field instructors will be even better qualified to lead SuperCyclist teacher trainings in the future. Participating instructors include: Doug Ballew, David Eggleston, Regina Garcia, Laura King, Stanley Kuenstler, Dean Lewis, Nancy Meredith, Susan Wagner and Gail Wellenkamp. |

BikeTexas Seeks Corporate Partners |

Thursday, 29 September 2005 |
|
Would your business or corporation like to be more involved in advancing bicycle access, safety and education? Are you looking to partner with a local nonprofit organization to increase your involvement in your local community?
The Texas Bicycle Coalition is looking for corporate partners to help sponsor our SuperCyclist bicycle safety education program in school districts across Texas. This training plays a critical role in reducing bike-related injuries and deaths among Texas youth. However, our grants through Texas Department of Transportation and Carol M. White Physical Education Program only cover a portion of the materials and staffing required to provide this quality bicycle safety education training to Texas teachers. |
