Houston ISD SuperCyclist Training Rescheduled
Thursday, 02 February 2006

On August 18, 2005, nine-year-old Ruth Young was riding her bicycle to school when she was tragically struck and killed by a school bus a block from Frazier Elementary in Pasadena. Texas Bicycle Coalition quickly responded and, with the support of Superintendent Dr. Abelardo Saavedra and Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston), coordinated a SuperCyclist bicycle safety education teacher training for all 207 elementary schools in Houston Independent School District. Unfortunately, the September 30, 2005 training had to be postponed as Houston was evacuated in preparation for Hurricane Rita.

The Houston ISD SuperCyclist Training has been rescheduled for Monday, April 24, 2006. This is a district in-service day, and as such attendance is expected to be very high. Details on the location for the training will be available at www.BikeTexas.org/Trainings.

The Texas Bicycle Coalition is looking for corporate partners to help sponsor our SuperCyclist bicycle safety education program in school districts across Texas. This training plays a critical role in reducing bike-related injuries and deaths among Texas youth. However, our grants through Texas Department of Transportation and Carol M. White Physical Education Program only cover a portion of the materials and staffing required to provide this quality bicycle safety education training to Texas teachers.
