Texas Trails Network Holds Annual Convention at The Woodlands
TheWoodlandsRiverTaxis Texas Bicycle Coalition staff attended the 14th annual Texas Trails Network (TTN) State Trails Conference held January 23rd - 25th at The Woodlands. The cold, drizzly, three-day conference had convened with a fireside roundtable discussion on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the future of trail development in Texas.

On Thursday, attendees chose from presentations along three program tracks: Trail Design, Economics and Health/Wellness. The conference ended on Friday, January 25th with a tour of The Woodlands extensive trail network connecting homes, schools, parks and a riverwalk through the downtown area.

At Thursday’s lunch, the trail project in the area of the Attucks and Barker Reservoirs  (20 miles west of downtown Houston) was outlined by Robert Rayburn of the Energy Corridor District of Harris County. The “Energy Corridor” gets its name from the major energy companies that have large office campuses in the area along Interstate 10 (Katy Freeway). They are active partners in Houston’s trail initiatives.

NPS Listening Sessions Report

Texas Bicycle Coalition’s Trail Program Coordinator, Mark Stine, attended the NPS Listening session in San Antonio last week and was able to gain information regarding how the future plans for the National Parks Service (NPS) will affect Texas Mountain biking in both NPS facilities and local communities. STORM’s very own, George Longoria spoke to the gathering about some of the benefits of mountain biking activities and trails at NPS facilities.

We want to share that information with you and encourage you to provide your comments to the NPS forum before April 2nd at their website: www.nps.gov/2016   Key words such as “mountain bikes” and “kids” are important as NPS will electronically scan the thousands of entries they receive.

Please forward this information to other interested mountain bikers. We would like to ensure a good response to the NPS regarding these programs and show our support of National Parks. IMBA, a long-time partner of Texas Bicycle Coalition, is working closely with the NPS and setting up a grassroots campaign to provide communities with information about the programs that will be involved.

Texas Bicycle Coalition will provide further information on our website: www.biketexas.org  so, please continue to check back for updates.

Proposed Bicycle Route: Old Texas 20

A proposed 180-mile, 100% on-road bicycle route, connecting the downtowns of Houston and Austin — as well as a dozen communities in between — gained substantial momentum in November as the result of two recent events.

The Old Texas Highway 20 Houston to Austin On-Road Intercity Bicycle Route is just the first in the pipeline of a number of projects that are envisioned to create a statewide network of signed and promoted bicycle routes, mostly on-road.  These routes will connect Texas cities, towns, rural communities, historic sites, parks and other points of interest.
