Though the Texas legislature doesn't convene until January, we are already hard at work on our legislative agenda. The BikeTexas board has been reviewing the options for pro-cycling legislation, but we already know that safe passing legislation will be included. Stay tuned for more details about the legislative agenda as the bills are written and the authors are confirmed. We'll keep you updated in the newsletter and in our Advocacy Update emails.
BikeTexas Partners with Circa-Austin on Bike Rides for Texas Conference Attendees.
A giant pecan tree provided relief from the near 100 degree July heat to conference attendees at the sprawling Hyatt Lost Pines Resort, on the Colorado River near Bastrop. BikeTexas staff was there to provide bicycles and cycling expertise to Circa-Austin, a destination management company. Circa provides a single point-of-contact for logistics and event activities for conference and convention guests in Central Texas (it also has a San Antonio office).
Last weekend, for the 11th year in a row, BikeTexas staff took the scenic journey up Hwy. 281 to Wichita Falls to attend Hotter'n Hell Hundred. It's always inspiring to see thousands of cyclists doing what they love, and this year was no exception. From our booth in the Expo Center, BikeTexas signed up almost 100 new and renewing members from all over Texas. It was a busy weekend for us! We had a great time and we can't wait to do it all again next year!

Many members took advantage of our new system of monthly memberships to renew at levels of $5, $10 or $20 (or more!) a month. Some appreciated BikeTexas' need for a more steady, reliable revenue stream, while others liked the convenience of pacing out their contribution over the year. We had a great time during the Hotter'n Hell Hundred Expo updating everyone on what we've been up to, and an even better time Saturday afternoon when we raffled off a cherry red 2009 TREK 7.3 Hybrid. New and renewing members each had the chance to enter to win the bike, and hopes were high as the time of the raffle approached. At 3 pm sharp, we enlisted the help of a young cyclist to draw the winning name out of the bucket and immediately called Rodney with the good news.
Congratulations to BikeTexas member and lucky winner Rodney Gilmore of Houston, and thanks to TREK for donating the beautiful bicycle to BikeTexas.
Waco Provides Great Cycling Backdrop for TAHPERD's 2008 Summer Conference
It was a short two-hour trip up IH-35 for BikeTexas staff to the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD) Summer 2008 Convention. About 500 P.E. teachers and school administrators gathered at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Waco July 20-22. They toured the TAHPERD Expo in between seminars and many visited the BikeTexas booth, staffed by Teacher Training Director Brenda Chuleewah and staff member Mark Stine.
